All around the world, incredible and ordinary women are sparking positive change within their communities and homes. Their achievements range from small and everyday — one woman making an impact upon a classroom or neighbourhood, for example — to the extraordinary, such as innovators who are leading movements, building businesses, or volunteering their time to make our planet a better place.
To tell these inspiring stories on an international stage, Nespresso Talents, a storytelling contest, is inviting aspiring filmmakers to create videos that celebrate women and their achievements, both big and small. The contest, now in its third year, aims to highlight talent and artistry through vertical video, a format fit for the best viewing experience in a mobile-first world, whilst supporting and nurturing young talent in film. This year’s contest also happens to align with International Women’s Day, coming up on March 8, which is an ideal moment to highlight these empowering stories.
Celebrating empowerment through inspirational storytelling
Storytelling is a powerful thing. Through art, storytellers make us see the world in a different light. They provide perspective and vision, showcase talent and strength, and inspire hope, laughter, and positive change.
Film in particular is a powerful medium for casting light on global and cultural stories of significance. By working with young filmmakers, Nespresso hopes to promote a vision for a brighter future. This year’s Nespresso Talents theme, “The Difference She Makes,” is built upon Nespresso’s brand ethos, which includes a celebration of individuals who think differently and break boundaries.
“Storytelling is part of our brand DNA,” explains Nespresso, elaborating that the brand currently has a presence at more than 12 film festivals around the globe. “We understand the power of immersing an audience into a story … We also all know amazing women who have inspired us in their own way, and this year, we wanted to build on our own commitment to positive change with knowledge and education, unleashing all the amazing potential and impact that comes with it.”
Previous years’ competitions have garnered more than 300 entries from more than 40 countries. This year, the contest includes a board of internationally acclaimed judges, including Vincent Perez, a Swiss actor, director, and photographer, Myriam Sainz, a strategy consultant and economic development specialist whose work focuses on agricultural sustainability and social good.
When Myriam Sainz found out about this year’s theme, The Difference She Makes, she was really excited about the opportunity. “The international non-profit I work for, TechnoServe, takes a business approach to solving poverty, and we understand well how critical women are to achieving long-term economic success. For years, we have partnered with Nespresso to help empower women coffee farmers in East Africa, connecting them to the knowledge, tools and markets they need to improve their coffee, their incomes—and, ultimately, their opportunities in life. So I see this film competition as a chance to share this kind of inspiration with the world—to show that no matter who they are, or where they come from, women are an unstoppable force for positive change in the world.”
